Scammers Target Avon Lake Residents
Con artists used COVID-19 assistance programs to pose as an Avon Lake resident.
AVON LAKE, OH — Police are investigating multiple suspected frauds perpetrated against Avon Laker residents over the past 30 days.
Between Sept. 6 and Sept. 24, someone posed as an Avon Lake resident to apply for Pandemic Unemployment Assistance. The resident told police about the con on Sept. 26 and officers filed a report on the con. The resident has been contacting various state agencies about the scam.
On Oct. 3, a person claiming to be an Ohio Edison representative contacted an Avon Lake resident. They said the resident's power would be shut off because of failure to make payments. The resident paid the fee before realizing they were being scammed.

The resident contacted her bank to try and stop the payment. Police did not say how much the resident may have lost in the scam.
Also on Oct. 3, someone contacted Avon Lake police and said there was a suicidal woman on Walker Road. When police arrived, they realized no one was in danger. It's not clear why someone made that call.
