Schools' Holiday Collection Drives Help Avon Lake Residents
The Avon Lake Schools have run a bevy of charitable collections to benefit local organizations. Find out how students are helping out.
AVON LAKE, OH — The Avon Lake City Schools are keeping the true holiday spirit alive this year. Different schools have run a bevy of collection drives to benefit charitable organizations throughout the community.
Like Avon Lake Police, several Avon Lake schools have run drives for the Avon and Avon Lake Community Resource Services (CRS) organization. The Avon Lake Board of Education collected themed family baskets for the group, for example. A representative for CRS told Patch that family baskets can include everything from a family movie night collection (with a few DVDs, candy, and a blanket for the family to cuddle on the couch); or a cleaning supplies basket (because necessities are some of the most helpful gifts a family can get).
Redwood Student Council took part in a Salvation Army collection at Giant Eagle, Westview Elementary students made bags to donate to St. Malachi's shelter in Cleveland (with letters from students, gloves, socks, wipes, water, snacks, etc.).

It wasn't just the students getting in on the holiday action. Learwood Middle School's head custodian, Mark Brandt, once again organized the annual Veteran Blanket Drive that was conducted throughout the whole district. Students collected more than 135 blankets and 53 pairs of socks for the Ohio Veterans Home.
