Sheriffs Will Step Up Traffic Patrols In Lorain County

With Halloween approaching, expect to see more sheriff's deputies on the roads.

AVON, OH — The Lorain County Sheriff's office will be stepping up traffic patrols between now and Halloween.

The main goal of this initiative, the office said, is to deter drunken drivers and speeding. Halloween can be a particularly deadly night for drivers, the sheriffs said.

"Halloween is meant to be scary, but not when it comes to driving. When it comes to drunk driving, Halloween can turn the roads into a true horror story," said Sheriff Phil Stammitti.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 41 percent of all fatal car accidents on Halloween involved a drunken driver.

"With Halloween weekend falling on a Saturday this year, we're certain to see extra parties throughout the weekend, and every single partygoer should plan their sober ride home in advance," Stammitti said. "Even one drink can impair judgement. You should never put yourself, or others, at risk because you made the selfish choice to drink and drive. Even one drink can be too many. Remember, buzzed driving is drunk driving."
