Sleeping Driver Nabbed In Avon Lake: Police

Callers reported seeing a person passed out behind the wheel of a car. Police said the man was drunk.

AVON LAKE, OH — Police had to arrest a man that was found sleeping behind the wheel of a running car in the parking lot of an Avon Lake grocery store. A caller said they had been driving behind the man and believed he was drunk.

The caller reached out to police at about 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, saying they saw the car turn into the parking lot of Giant Eagle on Walker Road. Officers were sent to check it out.

When police arrived at the grocery store, they were able to locate the car the caller had talked about. The driver was asleep behind the wheel.

Officers roused the man and put him through a series of sobriety tests. Police then arrested the 61-year-old Avon Lake man. When officers searched his car they found an open alcoholic beverage on the floor of the car.

The man was being charged with operating a vehicle impaired and having an open container of liquor in a car.
