Superheroes Taking Over Avon Sept. 16

An event for sick children will see 40 costumed characters take over the city and kidnap Mayor Bryan Jensen.

AVON, OH — Capes and spandex will arrive with a superhero landing in Avon in September. The city announced it has partnered with 'Super Heroes to Kids in Ohio' to create Super Hero Day on Sept. 16. The event will allow children battling illness and adversity to battle "dastardly" super villains alongside their favorite heroes.

Mayor Bryan Jensen, along with local celebrities, will help the children wrangle up and defeat the villains. Then the public will be able to take photos with the more than 40 costumed characters there for the event.

As part of the event, short, scripted scenes will be held throughout Avon, with public photos taking place at the Avon Aquatic Facility, 36265 Detroit Rd. at 2 p.m. Public parking will be available. The program will focus on about 20 kids from throughout the region. Seven of the children are from Avon, Pam Fetcher, one of the city's organizers told Patch.

"We sent out a notice to all of our elementary schools asking for student nominations," she said. The schools selected seven children, under the age of 12, to participate.

She said the group of 20 children will be honored at a private luncheon, with skits performed just for them. The kids will get lunch and a kit, packed with a cape and handcuffs and other items to help them save Avon. The final two skits of the day will be held at the Aquatic Center, before the general public is invited to join.

Fetcher said attorney Tim Misny (of "I'll make them pay" fame) will play Lex Luthor, Shelby Miller from Channel 19 news will portray Lois Lane, and Mayor Bryan Jensen will be kidnapped and in need of the kids help.

The Super Heroes to Kids in Ohio event was previously held in Elyria.
