University Hospitals Temporarily Closes Avon Emergency Department
The hospital system said it is opening urgent cares to compensate for the loss of services.
AVON, OH — The freestanding University Hospitals emergency department in Avon is suspending operation, the hospital system announced this week. The facility will close at 7 a.m. on Sunday, April 26.
To compensate for the loss of the emergency department, University Hospitals is opening an urgent care in Avon on Monday, April 27. Hospital system leaders said the urgent care will offer lower-cost access to many of the same services offered at its closed emergency department.
University Hospitals officials said there has been a sharp decline in patients at emergency departments because of the new coronavirus outbreak. Patient volumes are down 50 percent at hospital-based emergency departments and down 70 percent at freestanding emergency departments.

All hospital-based emergency departments remain open. Medical staff at closed facilities will be reassigned to locations experiencing surges in patient volume.
"We appreciate the flexibility and dedication of our caregivers in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has created unique demands for our health care services,” said University Hospitals Chief Operating Officer Dr. Eric Beck.

The University Hospitals emergency department in Avon is located on Healthway Drive.
University Hospitals already closed emergency departments in Andover and North Ridgeville. Besides Avon, it also closed emergency departments in Amherst, Broadview Heights, Kent and Twinsburg.
