Wind Storm Leaves 1,700 Without Power, Damages Home in Avon Lake
Storm is latest in week of wild weather.
Last night’s windstorm left damage throughout Avon Lake and has left 1,700 without power, according to First Energy. Many homes in the 45 allotment were left powerless and one home on Lear Road sustained significant damage after a tree fell on it just after 5:30 a.m.
Lear Road residents Bill Wilson and Catherine Grunn were up at 5:30 a.m. when they heard the wind.
“I turned to Cathy and said, ‘Do you hear that wind?’” Wilson said. “About five minutes later we hear, ‘Boom!’ and ran outside.”

The couple was fortunate. Most of the damage was exterior and no one was injured at their home, across from
Electric Boulevard near was closed off soon after 8 a.m. while tree trimmers cleared branches resting on power lines. Avon Lake police and fire vehicles were on hand for a half hour while workers in cherry pickers cleared the lines.

The wild weather continues in a week that started with flooding after torrential rains came through Avon Lake on Monday, flooding backyards, streets and basements. Wednesday brought additional storms and hail. The National Weather Service is predicting more stormy weather.
