WOW Workers Hit Gas Line on Williamsburg Drive

No injuries reported or evacuation required.

Wide Open West (WOW) Workers installing cable on the southern part of Williamsburg Drive hit a gas line April 12, and while the leak was considered “significant,” no injuries were reported, and no evacuation was required.

The road remains open to traffic.

Avon Lake Firefighter Brian Gilles said the received a call from WOW at 10:51 a.m.

“They hit the gas line and called Columbia Gas,” Gilles said. “There was no significant danger at that time.”

Gilles said there was an odor of gas and people were kept a safe distance away.  Avon Lake Fire stayed at the scene until Columbia Gas arrived and turned off the gas.

Gilles said it wasn’t clear if gas lines were accurately marked.

Williamsburg extends from Electric Boulevard south to a newer section of housing that continues through to Jaycox Road. The leak was near Dakota Run.

 At 3 p.m. construction was continuing in the area. WOW has been running cable throughout the city in the past few months.
