Beachwood Cancels Community Center Programming

As a precaution against the spread of coronavirus, Beachwood is cancelling all Community Center programming.

BEACHWOOD, OH — All Beachwood Community Center programming will be suspended until at least March 19, the city announced on Tuesday. Officials said they have no evidence a person infected by the new coronavirus visited the facility, but want to protect residents proactively.

The Beachwood Arts Council concert scheduled for Sunday, March 22 has also been cancelled.

"Recent news that three people in Cuyahoga County have tested positive for coronavirus disease, COVID-19, along with concerns for the high-risk individuals who participate in our programs, have led the city of Beachwood to suspend all public programming at the Beachwood Community Center beginning Wednesday, March 11 through end-of-day on Thursday, March 19," the city announced in a statement.

City officials said there is no evidence that an infect person visited any municipal buildings. However, out of an abundance of caution, all programs are cancelled until at least March 19.

The Senior Day Out luncheon scheduled for March 19 has been cancelled and refunds are available. Community Services staff will contact members of programs to tell them of the cancellations.

A staff member at the Jewish Education Center (JEC) has tested positive for the new coronavirus, according to the Jewish Federation of Cleveland. The school will be closed for two weeks as a precaution.

The staff member rode a bus to the conference. That bus was shared by other Northeast Ohioans, including JEC students, who have since been asked to self-quarantine, the Cleveland Jewish News reported.

Two students at Solon High School were also asked to self-quarantine after possibly coming in contact with COVID-19.

There are currently 755 confirmed cases of the COVID-19 virus in the U.S. and 22 related deaths as of Tuesday afternoon, according to Johns Hopkins University.
