Beachwood Takes Sixth at Chagrin Valley Conference Wrestling Tournament
Alec Jacober wins 130-pound class championship, three other Bison post top-three finishes
While Beachwood ultimately finished in sixth place at the Chagrin Valley Conference wrestling tournament, four wrestlers took home top-three honors in their respective weight classes, with Alec Jacober bringing home a championship.
Kenston ultimately won the tournament, edging out Aurora 227-223.5. Perry (193.5) took third while Cardinal and Independence round out the top five with 124 and 95.5 points, respectively.
Jacober won the 130-pound weight class championship with two major decisions, 22-8 in the semifinals over Logan Henderson of Berkshire and then 20-6 in the finals over Tony Tarulli of Orange.

“[Jacober] did what we expected him to do," Head Coach Dugan Bentley said. “He was very aggressive and put a lot of points on the board. He was relentless with his attacks from all different angles. He put on a clinic in wrestling.”
Ryan Harris defeated Aaron Gessic of Perry to advance to the finals of the 125 class with a 6-1 decision. He lost to Tre Smith of Kenston by a 9-6 decision.

“Harris wrestled Tre Smith before and was much more aggressive this time,” Bentley said. “Tre Smith is one of the top-ranked kids in the state. He ended up losing, but if he wrestles that way he’ll find himself going very far in March.”
David Shapiro beat Brian Deming of Perry with a pin at 2:28 to advance to the 171 class championship. He lost to Danny McNamara of Aurora in a 7-1 decision.
“Shapiro wrestled very tough and put himself in a position to win against a state qualifier,” Bentley said. “A lot of people may have thought [Shapiro] wouldn’t be that tough but he gave [McNamara] everything.”
Sammy Gross took third in the 112 class with a 7-3 decision over TJ Malkus of Berkshire. Gross lost earlier in the semifinals to Casey Johns of Cardinal by a 6-1 decision.
“Sammy Gross really had a good day,” Bentley said. “He had some tough kids that he had to go through and we didn’t see the best of him. He has a lot more ability than he showed out here today.”
Earlier in the day Beachwood only won one of their seven consolation matches. Aaron Friedman defeated Cody Charvat of Berkshire with a 4-2 decision. Friedman was pinned by Grahm Montague of Independence in the next round at 4:22.
“We weren’t able to put up a lot of points from some of our younger guys,” Bentley said. “We were looking for them to get some wins here and there. We had a couple kids who were maybe a little shell-shocked with the crowd. I would have liked to (have) been in the top four but fifth or sixth isn’t bad.”
Beachwood hosts the OHSAA Div. III Sectional Wrestling Tournament on Friday, Feb. 18 at 6 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 19 at 10 a.m.
