Beachwood's Population Drops by 2 Percent
U.S. Census numbers show city's population decreasing, racial landscape changing

Beachwood's population dropped by just under 2 percent and has become more diverse this decade, according to the U.S. Census.
The first race and population numbers were released this afternoon.
Beachwood's population, at 12,186 in 2000, has dropped by around 200 people to 11,953 in 2010, but that's compared to the county's 8 percent drop in total population. Ohio's overall population increased 1.6 percent.

The city's racial landscape is seeing a bigger change, however: though nearly every minority population rose in the past 10 years, the number of whites dropped by 12.4 percent. Whites, who made up 86.5 percent of the population in 2000 now make up 77.3 percent. The city's Asian population, though still a vast minority, has doubled, and the black or African-American population has risen from 9.1 percent of the overall population to 13.7 percent.
The adult population – as compared to children – has not seen a dramatic change, though the median age and the over-65 population numbers are not yet available.
