Bison Boys Tennis Team Opens Season With Win Over Avon Lake

Beachwood’s boys’ tennis team opened the 2013 season with a big 4-1 win at Avon Lake on Tuesday. The Bison won two of three singles matches and swept both doubles matches.

“Avon Lake is a good team and we beat them 4-1,” said Beachwood coach David Cole. “I feel very good about our match and really good about how our kids played for the most part. They didn’t let the elements bother them—it was cold—but they focused well and didn’t make a lot of mistakes.”

Junior Karan Gill played first singles and won his match over Tim Villavi, 7-6, 6-3. Junior Daniel Rodriquez came up short against Hunter Tharp in the second singles match, 6-4, 4-6, 2-6 and Sophomore Alex Machtay beat Jimmy Chase in third singles, 6-2, 6-3.

In first doubles, senior Andrew Romanoff and sophomore Kaustav Malik teamed up to beat Jack O’Neill and Eric Stonecipher 6-4, 6-2 and senior Brock Hersch and sophomore Griffin Celleghin beat Austin Wright and Austin Rice in second doubles, 6-3, 6-3.

“We got really good leadership from the seniors in doubles,” Cole said. “There was a lot of passing and enthusiasm.”

The win added some momentum for the Bison as they host Chagrin Valley Conference rival Orange on Wednesday.

“It was a really good opening win heading into Orange,” Cole said. “It’s a conference match and a rival against a team we’ve struggled with. Hopefully it bodes well for us against Orange.”

Avon Lake’s JV won 3-2.
