Healthy & Delicious: Hudson’s Restaurant

This week Healthy & Delicious visits Hudson's Restaurant located in Hudson, OH.

This week Healthy & Delicious visits Hudson’s Restaurant located in Hudson, OH. Hudson’s is a charming family run restaurant that specializes in casual, yet fine American cuisine.

The obvious Healthy & Delicious choice would have been a salad with grilled chicken or grilled salmon, but “M” unexpectedly served me their Boca™ Burger. This garden burger usually comes with lettuce, tomato and red onion and a choice of one side (french fries, home fries, homemade potato chips, vegetable medley, or cole slaw). “M” however, added Swiss cheese and avocado to my veggie burger (served on two pieces of whole wheat toast) with a side of steamed veggies.

As I have said in previous posts, anytime I am served a meal containing all the food groups (if you count avocados and tomatoes as fruit), I am a happy camper. In this case, the Swiss cheese covered the dairy group: the lettuce, red onion, and vegetable medley covered the vegetable group; the tomatoes and avocado covered the fruit group (or veggie group); the wheat bread covered grain group; and the veggie burger covered the protein group.

While I do fancy a good cheeseburger, I don’t think many restaurants can cook them well enough for me to waste the fat and calories. For those of you who have not tried a Boca™ or MorningStar Farms™ burger, they happen to be both “Healthy & Delicious.” Even my Indiana born, meat and potatoes husband likes the taste of these burgers. These “burgers” are low in cholesterol, high in protein, and are a good source of fiber and iron. And, compared to traditional ground beef hamburgers, these “burgers” have approximately 50% less fat.

Overall, this meal met my “Healthy & Delicious” expectations. I have only one issue: the portion size. Because the Boca™ Burger was so large, I got double the necessary amount of toppings and bread. I am not concerned with the lettuce, tomato or onion, but too much cheese, avocado, and bread can contribute to excessive caloric intake.

Note: If you are given a choice of a side, ask for steamed veggies or side salad. This will help you stay on the “Healthy & Delicious” track.
