Credit Card Info Stolen From 12 Restaurants Nationwide

Businesses in California, Illinois and Ohio, among others, were victims of a data breach targeting customers' credit card information.

BEACHWOOD, OH — A data breach may have compromised credit card information at 12 restaurants nationwide, with locations in California, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey and Ohio. Customers who used a debit or credit card at the restaurants may have had their payment information stolen. The data breach took place between Oct. 26, 2016, and Feb. 3, 2017.

All of the impacted locations are managed by Beachwood-based Select Restaurants. Customers may have had their card number, card expiration date, CVV and cardholder name stolen. A list of all impacted restaurants is at the bottom of this article.

The company says it began investigating unusual activity at its third-party vendor and data systems on March 30, 2017. The company contracted an independent forensic expert to look into its systems and discover if they had been compromised.

On April 26, 2017, Select Restaurants had its suspicions confirmed. There had been a possible compromise of guests' debit and credit cards over a roughly three month span.

After discovering the breach, Select used the forensic investigators to determine what happened, how the information was stolen, what information was taken, remove any malware in the system and implement new procedures to prevent further breaches. The Secret Service is helping investigate the incident.
