Life experiences and family shaped the lives and careers of many great Jewish American producers and directors. We will look at the films, the times and the varied backgrounds of the Catskill resort tummler Mel Brooks, the prolific Woody Allen, the always inventive Billy Wilder and the life and films of the recently deceased Sidney Lumet. Film historian Bill Rafalski will discuss the early movie business, silent movies, escape to Hollywood from Nazi Germany, the Yiddish Theatre in NYC, live TV dramas, comedy writing for TV, and standup comedy.
