Jewish Federation Of Cleveland To Present Volunteer Award

BEACHWOOD, OH - Gayle Horwitz will receive the Irene Zehman Award on May 18. The award, given by the Jewish Federation of Cleveland, recognizes women for their volunteer work and commitment to lofty ideals. Horwitz volunteers for US Together and "adopted" a Congolese refugee family new to Cleveland.

In an effort to help the family adjust to life in Northeast Ohio, Horwitz organized drives to collect housewares, furniture, children's toys, clothes, food, and holiday gifts. She brought in so many items that she was able to help other refugee families in the area.

“Taking the time to welcome a stranger in your community is really the first step in creating peace in this world,” said Horwitz, a senior attorney with the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights, in a statement. “It's the way you create a bridge, it's the way you create understanding, and it's the way you create love between different kinds of people.”

Horwitz has long been an advocate for immigrants and has spoken in front of South Euclid City Council about becoming a "Welcoming City".

Horwitz will receive her award during the Women's Philanthropy Spring Luncheon on May 18 at 11:30 a.m., at Landerhaven, 6111 Landerhaven Drive, Mayfield Heights.

During the luncheon, Sharon Tal, designer of Maskit, Israel’s Luxury Fashion Brand, will serve as the keynote speakers. Attendees will also be able to donate new or gently used clothing items and school supplies to support the Cleveland Chesed Center.

The luncheon regularly attracts 800 women, the Federation said.
