Senior Standouts: William Wolkoff

This three-sport athlete has his sights set on broadcasting

William Wolkoff needed a change after playing junior varsity soccer for two years. He kept hearing from a good friend, Alex Wertheim, how cross country was the most fun he’s ever participated in.

After running with the team in a meet for the first time during his junior year, Wolkoff saw exactly what Wertheim meant. He loved how the course took him through a variety of different sceneries. He also enjoyed seeing his team thrive.

“The team was tightly bonded. We never got into any arguments.” Wolkoff said. “It was a really fun atmosphere. We were smallest team so everyone got to run.”

It’s one of the reasons Wolkoff’s most memorable accomplishment was when the team surprised everyone and won the Orange Invitational.

“I remember hugging Isaiah Watts and John Rodriguez,” Wolkoff said. “It was unexpected, but a great moment.”

Cross country wasn’t the only sport Wolkoff participated in. He swam, ran track and was a member of Beachwood’s Ultimate Frisbee club. Frisbee is something he hopes to continue playing in college, however his varsity career ends at Beachwood.

“I knew that after high school I’d be focusing on what I’m going to be doing for the rest of my life, which unfortunately wasn’t any of those sports.” Wolkoff said. “I was ready to move on. I gave my all to Beachwood.”

Wolkoff hopes sports continue to play a big part of his future plans. As an electronic media major at the University of Cincinnati, he hopes to one day be a sports commentator or public address announcer.

“From the beginning of seventh grade I really started to get into sports,” Wolkoff said. “I watched Sports Center every morning and I love how the media covered everything that had to do with every single team in every sport. I love the conversation and the arguments about sports.”

Wolkoff ideally wants to either call baseball games or become a public address announcer for an NBA team.
