BRECKSVILLE, OHIO – Cuyahoga Valley Career Center is pleased to announce that two of its Programming & Software Development students earned second places in national level competition on May 9 and 10 in Orlando, Florida. The competition is sponsored by Business Professionals of America (BPA). Of the two, one is Brecksville-Broadview Heights’ own, Brian Moore, a senior in Programming & Software Development.
Brian’s challenge was to create a Mobile phone/tablet application to assist convention attendees to organize events and times of meetings, rehearsals, flights and room assignments and to track attendees’ locations. Brian had placed in regional and state level competition in order to advance to nationals. Accompanying him to national competition as a contestant was Nathan Janka, adult student in the Computer Networking Academy program.
In addition to this national award, Brian was selected the Outstanding Student in the Programming & Software Development program. His instructor is Mrs. Heidi Grivas. Other Brecksville-Broadview Heights students selected by their instructors as “Outstanding” include Jared Baschko, senior, Auto Body; Seth Ventry, senior, Computer Aided Design; and Adam Chalasinski, senior, Marketing Technology.

Samantha Liebhart, a senior in Graphic Imaging Technology, participated on a Graphics Team that placed first in SkillsUSA State competition. She and her team will advance to national competition in June. Taylor Sandy, a junior in Digital Design, was also a member of a SkillsUSA State team that placed second in the state for its Career Pathways Arts presentation.
Senior Amanda Alai was selected the Student Employee of the Month for April. She is graduating from the Marketing Technology program. Amanda worked two jobs throughout the winter, one at Brandywine Ski Resort and another at the Wing Warehouse where she is currently employed.

Her instructor, Ms. Germaine Polensek stated, “When I do my worksite visits, she is always upbeat and immediately makes the customers feel welcome and happy to be there.” Mrs. Polensek added that Amanda’s employees evaluated her as “Excellent” in all categories including personal appearance, attendance, human relations, attitude and work performance. “You don’t get these accolades without earning them,” Mrs. Polensek said. Amanda’s employer said she is a model employee whose “norm it is to go above and beyond.”
