Board of Education Approves 2012-2013 Calendar, School Counseling Curriculum

  • Superintendent Scot Prebles shared a letter from the state superintendent to the district, commending it on earning a spot on the . Prebles congratulated the students, teachers, staff and parents whose work made the honor possible.
  • Board President George J. Balasko mentioned the district’s recent financial audit, noting that it was clean and that the district received an Auditor of State Award with Distinction.
  • The board approved a calendar for the 2012-2013 school year. School will begin for students on Aug. 29, 2012 and end on June 7, 2013. Cathy Harbinak, the coordinator of community relations for the district, said two versions of the calendar were prepared for staff to vote on. The calendar that was presented to the board had received more than 60 percent of the vote.
  • The board also approved the . Board member Alan Scheufler said that he was impressed with the efforts to fight bullying inside and outside of school in the proposal. Before voting, a couple of board members addressed concerns that a community member had raised about whether the content fit with her values during the public comment portion of the meeting, explaining why they felt it was important to approve. Board member David Tryon said he understood her concerns, but that it was important to monitor, rather than micromanage, the department.
