Deer Birthing Season Is Here; Our Hostas Thankful for Deer Fence

This morning I was mowing the back lawn when a bambi jumped up from a fern bed and ran away, obviously startled by the noise. Yes, it is deer birthing season and that means the deer population is in the rise.

This year we are better prepared to protect our hostas, lilies, azeleas, and other plants/shrubs that deer like to feed on. Last fall, we built a deer fence of netting material called Deer Fence-X (Dalen Gardeneer 7-ft by 100 ft), purchased from Pettiti Garden Center, along with metal stakes. A wire strung from stake to stake holds the almost invisible mesh upright and neat looking.

It took some experimentation to get it right from a functional standpoint. And from a cost standpoint too.

This past winter, the fence protected our bird feeding area from the deer, who previously liked to scarf up all the food we left for ground-feeding birds.

And so far this spring, our hostas are thriving. In the past, by this time, the deer had eaten them down to stems. We're looking forward to seeing how big they become--and finally see what they are supposed to look like.
