Want to move to make a difference?

Human trafficking stats blow your mind and break your heart? Local mom (non-runner) decides to move to make a difference and helps to create UnVeil 5/10k and invites your family to move.

If you're like me, you hear sobering statistics and your heart just aches.  About a year ago, the statics surrounding human trafficking in Ohio and around the world blew my mind.  I wanted to do something.  But, what could I do?  I've got young kids, and I can't just fight the evil on my own.  But, despite what I couldn't do, I could move to make a difference.

I, along with my friends at Northfield Baptist Church, local businesses and regional residents created the UnVeil 5/10 k race to support Women At Risk, International.

But, wait!  I am not a racer!  UnVeil is a movement.  Interested “movers” can choose to walk, jog or run and can choose between the 5k course or the 10k course. There is no price difference between the courses and 100% of the proceeds benefits Women At Risk, International, an organization dedicated to fighting human trafficking here and around the world.

It's on again this year!

We call it a movement because we want people of all ages, genders and athletic abilities to know that they can do their part to help end human trafficking.  Last year, we had top athletes from around the area as well as 80 year old women cross the finish line.  We had children zoom by their parents and mothers and fathers push babies in strollers.  This heartache affects us all.  It’s here in our community, and we can do something about it.

Not convinced?  Here are those heart renching statistics:

  • Every 30 seconds a woman is sold into slavery
  • 300,000 woman are trafficked in the US every year.
  • 114 – 200 million women are “demographically missing” around the world.
  • Every 2-4 years, the world looks way from a victim count on the scale of Hitler’s Holocaust.
  • 800,000 people (worldwide) a year are trafficked against their will.
  • 50% are children
  • 70% are women
  • A preliminary report on the scope of the problem in Ohio cited 13 years old as the most common age in Ohio for youth to become victims of child sex trafficking.  Nationally, over 100,000 children are thought to be involved in the sex trade.

Last year, we had 150 racers and generated $3000+ for Women At Risk, Int.

Do something more than just be sad about it.  Put your feet down on the pavement.  Put your faith to the test, and choose to move to make a difference!
