Brecksville-Broadview Heights Board of Education News, July 25, 2011

A number of issues were discussed during the Monday meeting.

The Brecksville-Broadview Heights Board of Education and during its Monday meeting, but that’s not all that was on the agenda. Here are a few other highlights:

  • The board discussed purchasing new books for the Advanced Placement, or AP, economics and world history classes. Carla Calevich, the director of curriculum and instruction for the district, said the books are designed to prepare students for the AP tests, offering opportunities to practice in the same format as the tests as they go through the book. No formal action was taken on the proposal.
  • The board approved job descriptions for content leaders and literacy coaches in the district. The content leaders would work as part of the professional learning communities—groups of teachers working collaboratively—at the elementary level, Superintendent Scot Prebles said after the meeting. They would oversee their group, much like department chairs do at the high school level. These are not new jobs, but rather, additional responsibilities, he said.
  • Members approved reimbursement for transportation of students who attend non-district schools for the 2010-2011 school year. If a student cannot take district transportation to their school of choice, the district must reimburse his or her family. This year, each family received about $200, and the total cost to the district for last school year was a little more than $13,000.
  • The board approved a resolution to accept a number of gifts to the Athletic Department during the 2010-2011 school year. Most of the gifts were from the Bees Athletic Boosters, but there were also gifts from other individuals and organizations. The total was close to $37,000.
