The National Merit Scholarship Corporation this week named its 2012 semifinalists.
According to a press release from the corporation, the not-for-profit organization has been in existence for more than 50 years. Students across the country entered the scholarship competition by taking the 2010 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. About 16,000 students were named semifinalists.
Those semifinalists included four students:
- Hannah M. Fiore
- Connor E. Majstorovic
- Aaron G. Markowitz
- Thomas Pruchinski
According to the release, a majority of the students—90 percent—will become finalists. Finalist standing is based on a student’s academic record in high school, his or her SAT score, an endorsement from his or her principal and a completed application.
Finalists have the chance to compete for scholarships from the corporation, from corporate partners and from colleges. The winners will be announced this spring and summer.
