Brecksville Looks to Remove 249 Ash Trees

Thanks to the emerald ash borer, the city of Brecksville is looking to remove 249 “dead or dying” ash trees around the city. 

At Tuesday’s meeting, Brecksville City Council authorized the city to apply for a $33,485 grant from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources to help pay for the removal of “dead or dying” ash trees.

“The emerald ash borer is definitely in town,” said service director Ron Weidig. “They are all over town.”

City officials said they believe the emerald ash borer arrived in Brecksville a few years ago.

The Asian beetle is a highly invasive, destructive insect that feeds on the sap of ash trees.

They’re become common in Ohio and throughout the Midwest. Once an ash tree is infested with ash borer larva, it can die within a year.
