Brecksville Police Blotter: A Failed “Joy Ride,” Speeding and Selling Steaks While Wanted

The following information was supplied by the Brecksville Police Department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

The following incidents were reported by the from Jan. 24 to 28. The information was compiled from police reports.

Speeding leads to discovery of warrant
Brecksville police pulled over a speeding car on Fitzwater Road at 12:25 p.m. on Jan. 28. The officer quickly learned that the driver, a 19-year-old Richfield man, had a felony warrant out for his arrest in Broadview Heights. The warrant was for burglary. Police took the driver to the Broadview Heights station.

A “joy ride” gone bad
A 21-year-old Cuyahoga Falls man ended up in a ditch after going for a “joy ride” on Jan. 28. Police were called at 1:15 a.m. to Riverview Road, just north of Vaughn Road, by two individuals who had stopped to try to help the driver out of the ditch.

The driver told police that he had gone for a drive and tried to turn around in the middle of the road when he realized how far north he had gone. He considered walking back to Cuyahoga Falls, but decided to wait and see if anyone would come get him. The officer smelled alcohol on the driver’s breath and asked if he had been drinking. The driver said he had earlier in the night. After failing a few field sobriety tests, the driver was charged with operating a vehicle under the influence and taken back to the station. He later took a breath test, too.

But it wasn’t over just yet. Police found a knife with a 12-inch blade in the car. He was charged with carrying a concealed weapon, with operating a car under the influence, with operating a car under the influence based on blood alcohol content and with operation without being in control.

Passenger probably wishes they had a permit
Police stopped to talk to a man who was selling steaks without a permit on Glen Eagle Drive at 1:15 p.m. on Jan. 24. The driver had a permit for Cleveland, but not Brecksville. The police ran the names of both the passenger and driver, learning that the passenger had a number of minor warrants out in his name. The Seven Hills police wanted the 30-year-old Cleveland man held on a warrant for failing to appear for a marijuana possession charge.

When your car breaks down, leaving the drugs may be a bad idea
Police found marijuana, two state IDs and a bible in a disabled vehicle on state Route 82. Officers were called to check out the vehicle just before 8 a.m. on Jan. 24. When the driver could not be found, officers made plans to tow the unlocked vehicle and started looking through it.

Before they towed it, the driver, a 59-year-old Broadview Heights man, and another man walked up with a can of gasoline. Officers gave the driver the chance to get money for the service fee, so the vehicle could be released from the towing company, but it still wouldn’t start. The vehicle was towed anyway and the driver was charged with possession of marijuana.
