City Council Honors Former Police Chief Dennis A. Kancler

The retiree was recognized amid the regular agenda.

Tuesday night’s  meeting commenced with the recognition of Dennis A. Kancler's achievements throughout the years, as he sat with his family among a full room of about 50. for the city.

Larry Potla, council president, briefly overviewed Kancler’s law enforcement start in 1968 and through to his retirement.

“It’s not often that somebody works for a community or any employee and gives so much of his life to the city or the employer,” Mayor Jerry N. Hruby said.

He and others went on to describe Kancler's great service to Brecksville, and the way he handled his job while leaving selfish thoughts aside.

Kancler received many handshakes and gifts, including a wooden timepiece. He took a few minutes to give his thanks to the audience and city.

“I’m exceedingly grateful for what you (council) have done for all these men and women,” Kancler said. “It’s the grace of God that puts you together with people of this caliber.”

In other council news:

  • The cupola, or decorative dome structure, on top of City Hall will be removed for restoration in the spring at a cost of about $13,000, plus crane fees.
  • Committee members discussed new computers for the . Kathy Haystrick, cemetery and IT manager, explained the need for updated Sundance communication software and faster equipment. Council approved renewed software, 11 new rugged laptops and 10 car mounts.
