City Council News From July 19, 2011

Council approved resolutions related to some new construction projects and heard updates on Tuesday's flood.

Much of the time set aside for the committee meetings before was used to .  

Overnight rains closed some roads, and city employees were out in the early hours of the morning, trying to keep everything under control.

While there were a number of areas with flood damage—mainly Mill Road—many other places around town stood up well to the storm, Mayor Jerry N. Hruby said. He added that the places where the city has invested money did well.

Fire Chief Ed Egut noted that the damage was only a small percentage of what the city saw in the 2006 floods.

  • Council members approved resolutions allowing the mayor to enter into contracts with D & H Construction, Inc. on projects on Valleybrook Drive and in the Chippewa Hills development. City Engineer Gerald Wise said the Valleybrook project was to repair the storm sewer there, and there were various outdoor Chippewa Hills projects, like repairs on water valves. 
  • Council also approved a resolution that will move the forward. The Floyd Browne Group will design the construction of the project, which will help the city get the details it needs to get quotes for the project, Hruby said after the meeting.
  • Member Gerald F. Broski, chairman of the streets and sidewalks committee, told council about a request from the Ohio Department of Transportation. The department plans to make repairs on the state Route 82 bridge over the Cuyahoga River, Broski said, and needs permission from the city to move forward. The repairs would be at no cost to the city. Members approved his request for consent legislation to be written.
  • Member Rex Mack gave council an update from the recreation commission’s last meeting. About 20 residents brought a petition, signed by more than 250 individuals, asking the city to consider building a pool as part of the .
