The running of the 80th Ohio Derby was a special one for Carol Halberg, an occupational therapy assistant at The Village at Marymount.
Mushu, owned by Carol’s Halberg Performance Horses LLC, competed in this prestigious event on July 19 at ThistleDown Racino and finished 10th in the field of 11 horses. Mushu faced 20-1 odds to win the race.
The race was won by East Hill, who narrowly defeated Jessica’s Star at the wire.

“It was nerve-wracking,” Carol said of the race. “It was a big race and it sure would have been nice to have done a little bit better.”
Jockey Jareth Loveberry rode Mushu to the 10th-place finish. Mushu is trained by Anthony F. Rini. Breeders are Tracy Farmer and Jessica Halberg.

“Mushu needed the race and there was an opening in the Ohio Derby so we thought we’d give it a try,” said Carol, The Village at Marymount’s March 2012 Franciscan Spirit Award winner.
