Mommy! Read it again!

Mommy! Read it again!

And again, and again, and again. Did I mention again? My daughter loves books. She’s a book fanatic.

I’m a very proud momma, so happy that she loves books so much. But, as many kids do, she gets fixated on certain books. During these times, she will want the same story over and over again. Every night at bedtime, it’s the same story.

We have favorite books in our home; however, we have others that this momma just doesn’t want to read any more. But Amelia loves those nonetheless, so I’ve resorted to trickery: several books are currently “hidden” under Amelia’s bed.
Why is it that kids – especially preschoolers – enjoy reading the same storybook over and over (and over)? I contacted the for some insight.

“It’s the familiarity, the comfort,” said Debra Brass, the library's children's supervisor. “Children will bond with the characters and love what they’re doing.”

Amelia likes to help me read the stories and will oftentimes complete sentences wherever I stop. “It’s an early literacy skill, to tell a story in sequence,” Brass said.

We are so lucky to have such a great resource right in our community. Amelia squeals with delight and runs, runs, runs to the back of the library and grabs the first storybook she finds.

So the next time you need to promote a change in your child’s reading routine, stop by the Brecksville library and discover something new. It will be new for your child and, sometimes more importantly, new for you.

Need some fresh storybook ideas? A few of Momma’s recommendations:

  • “The Very Cranky Bear” (we also love “The Very Itchy Bear”) by Nick Bland
  • “Buster” (as well as “Buster Goes To Cowboy Camp”) by Denise Fleming
  • “Once I Ate A Pie” by Patricia MacLachlan
  • “A Friend For Dragon” by Dav Pilkey
  • “Knuffle Bunny Too” (the sequel to “Knuffle Bunny”) by Mo Willems
  • “Dog Needs A Bone” by Audrey Wood

Happy reading!
