School Board Honors Students' Academic Achievements, Learns About Leadership Conference

High PSAT scorers were recognized by Brecksville-Broadview Heights Board of Education on Tuesday.

At Tuesday night’s , the board praised Commended Scholars and .

National Merit Semi-Finalists scored in the top 3.5 percent on the PSAT, while Commended Scholars scored in the top 5 percent. All are now eligible for scholarships, whether it be the official National Merit Scholarship or one from a local source such as a business.

“You demonstrate what we’d like to see in all of our students,” Superintendent Scot Prebles said.

Students received pins, award certificates and gift cards.

Some of the 15 students can also be found on the 800 Club wall at Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School for perfect scores on the PSAT, SAT or ACT, said Joseph Mueller, principal.

Following the award presentation, students involved in the Community Awareness and Prevention Association presented their experience from an August Enforcing Underage Drinking Laws Leadership Conference in Florida. Three of the four girls, Miranda Beran, Michelle Nin and Jordyn Prince, talked about goals and findings, such as ways to advertise against underage drinking. Student Emily Underation also took part in the conference.

Other items discussed at the Board of Education meeting:

  • A district survey was conducted on absentee voters to better understand their mindset and perception of the school communication related to levies and other issues pertaining to education. The findings showed better communication is needed, so things like Facebook and an electronic newsletter will now be used to provide school information in addition to print platforms and the district website, said Cathy Harbinak, coordinator of community relations.
  • The board discussed the entrepreneurial curriculum in the hopes to provide a better business education for our future leaders and workers.
  • Parental evaluations should have a more structured feedback to help principals shape better teachers, said board member David Tryon. The board discussed possibilities for evaluation improvements and thoughts on teacher raises based on merit.
