Stay Safe This Fourth of July
The state fire marshal has some tips for using novelty fireworks and reminders about what kinds are legal in Ohio.

Ohio’s state fire marshal wants to remind residents that the safest way to enjoy fireworks is to check out a licensed, professional display.
In a recent press release, State Fire Marshal Larry Flowers said that any type of firework—even sparklers—can be dangerous.
In Ohio, only trick and novelty fireworks that “smoke, sparkle, snap and snake” can be legally purchased and discharged by someone who is not licensed, according to the release. Other kinds, like bottle rockets, can be purchased in the state, but it’s a first-degree misdemeanor to discharge it in Ohio. That also applies if a person falsifies an application to buy fireworks or keeps them in Ohio for more than 48 hours.

If you plan to use novelty fireworks, follow these tips from the press release:
- Only use them under adult supervision, and make sure there’s one adult who knows the hazards of all the fireworks being used.
- Read and follow the directions on the labels.
- For sparklers, only light one at a time. Hold it away from your body, and put it in a bucket of water when you’re done.
- If someone does get burned, run cool water over the burn for two to three minutes and, if necessary, seek medical attention.
