Swim For A Good Cause Next Week at the Brecksville Community Center
The 26th-Annual Swim for Diabetes will take place in Brecksville on April 10, 2011.

Next Sunday, taking a swim at the may be more than just good exercise: it will also be a way to help out a local organization.
The Community Center is one of nearly 50 pools in the area that will take part in the 26th-annual Swim for Diabetes next weekend. Brecksville’s portion of the event will take place from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on April 10.
The fundraiser benefits the Diabetes Association of Greater Cleveland. Erin Kubat, the assistant aquatic coordinator at the Community Center, said the staff at the center likes to participate in the event because the money stays in the area. It seems like everyone knows somebody who has been affected by diabetes, Kubat said, and it’s good to know that the funds support people in the community.

The association uses the money to support diabetes education and programs like Camp Ho Mita Koda, a local summer camp for children with diabetes, said Lori Izeman, special events manager for the association.
People can pre-register or get involved on the day of the swim, Izeman said – donations aren’t due until May 6. Participants can download a pledge sheet from the association’s website or pick up a program. And people can give flat donations or pledge to give a certain amount per lap, Izeman said.

And this need not be an event just for serious swimmers. Izeman said that individuals can swim laps, walk in the water, splash around or even just walk around the pool.
