Here are the top three stories in Cincinnati today:
- The Housing Advisory Board, a group of people tasked to put together a plan for housing in Cincinnati, met for the first time yesterday — almost a year after the Council established its mission. The Board will recommend how to spend the city's Affordable Housing Trust Fund established in 2018 to incentivize the preservation and production of affordable housing through loans and grants. Cincinnati Development Fund President Joe Huber stated that the board, which includes former Mayor Roxanne Qualls, was specifically chosen by the city because of their expertise. (WVXU)
- William Pierce Washington, 52, was sentenced to more than 15 years in prison for sex trafficking a teenage girl with his half-brother. Washington trafficked the teenager for at least four months. He was also ordered to pay $194,000 in restitution to the victim. (WLWT Cincinnati)
- City leaders and community members came together last Thursday to announce a $1 million pedestrian safety initiative that would include the installation of approximately 30 new speed cushions in the highest risk streets in 10 neighborhoods. Mayor Aftab Pureval noted that more than 300 people were hit by cars in the city in the last year, seven of which died. Shawna Rodriguez, whose teenage daughter was killed by a hit-and-run driver while crossing Harrison Avenue on her way to school, said that her family has been working to get changes; however, the process has been slow. - Bob Herring, president of Cincinnati's sister city partnership with Kharkiv, Ukraine, said that he hopes to raise a mountain of money for Ukraine's second-largest city. "If they have the currency they can purchase what they need," said Herring. He added that their goal over the next month is to raise $100,000. (WLWT Cincinnati)
