🌱 $470M Budget Earmarks Public Safety + Fairfield Walmart Shooting

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Cincinnati.

Good morning, Cincinnati! Like many of you, the Patch team is taking some time off to celebrate Memorial Day, so you won't see a newsletter in your inbox on Monday morning. We will be back on Tuesday with your next update, but in the meantime, here's what's happening around town this holiday weekend.

First, today's weather:

Turning sunny and warmer. High: 73 Low: 56.

Here are the top three stories today in Cincinnati:

  1. A significant portion of Mayor Aftab Pureval's proposed $470 million dollar budget will go towards public safety. The budget is the first of his tenure since taking office in January. The plan calls for two new police and fire department recruiting classes with the city gaining as many as 88 new officers and 100 new firefighters. (WKRC TV Cincinnati)
  2. Cherry Blossom trees gifted to Cincinnati from the city of Adachi in Japan are finally going to be planted. After the trees initially came into the country in 2010 they were placed in quarantine where they tested positive for various viruses. After a complicated treatment process, the virus-free, newly stalked trees will continue to be cared for at the Krohn Conservatory and eventually planted in Eden Park. (The Cincinnati Enquirer)
  3. One person was killed and another critically wounded after a gunman opened fire at a Walmart in Fairfield Township on Thursday night. The suspect was wearing a mask, dark clothing and a red shirt when he fled the store. The victims of the shooting were a Walmart worker and a customer who intervened. (WHIO)
