1. Fire disrupts Cincinnati sober-living home, causes thousands in damage (fox19.com) — A weekend fire at Gateway House on Vine Street displaced about 20 men in a Cincinnati sober-living program and caused an estimated $50,000 in damage to their residence. Everyone escaped safely, but the building can't take new residents while repairs are made, and the nonprofit is seeking online donations to keep men in recovery housed and on track.
2. To stop gun thefts, Cincinnati to require cameras in parking lots (cincinnati.com) — Cincinnati City Council is moving toward requiring more security cameras in parking garages and surface lots to cut down on guns stolen from cars, which make up 70% of the city's gun thefts. Parking lot owners, including major local donors, are pushing back, while the final council vote is set for Sept. 30 and could change security expectations citywide.
3. FDA-approved drug offers hope of doubling survival for pancreatic cancer patients (local12.com) — A new FDA-approved targeted therapy is now available to pancreatic cancer patients in the Cincinnati area, and doctors say it could potentially double survival time for some people after diagnosis. Local oncologists describe the drug as practice-changing, and one nearby patient already reports better energy and appetite after starting treatment, offering new hope in a disease often found at an advanced stage.
4. Tri-State schools rank among Ohio's best; here's a look at the rankings (local12.com) — Several Cincinnati-area schools, including Seven Hills, Cincinnati Country Day, and Walnut Hills, just earned top spots in Niche's new Ohio rankings, highlighting strong local options from private prep to public districts. Mariemont, Mason, Sycamore, Wyoming, and Indian Hill also placed highly, giving Cincinnati families fresh data as they compare school quality and academic environments across the region.
5. Bengals, Fifth Third Bank partner in 'Huddle for Hunger' to help students (wlwt.com) — The Cincinnati Bengals and Fifth Third Bank are launching a Huddle for Hunger campaign to send thousands of weekend "power packs" home with students across 20 Greater Cincinnati schools. Working with Freestore Foodbank, they'll provide kid-friendly, shelf-stable food so children have enough to eat between Friday dismissal and Monday morning classes.
