Family-Owned Schwartz Jewelers to close after 88 years in Cincinnati

After 88 years in business and four generations of family ownership, Schwartz Jewelers in College Hill is preparing to close its doors. Fourth-generation owner Marty Schwartz described the decision to retire as bittersweet. “I've met some of my best friends through this business,” he said. “I’ve put a lot of hard work into making it successful, but because of some serious health issues, it’s time for me to slow down.”

A sale that marks the end of an era

The closing sale is now open to the public, and will feature deep discounts on everything in the store, including bridal sets, colored gemstones, fine jewelry, grandfather clocks, and fine collectibles.

“If you’ve been in our store, you’ll find everything 30 to 70 percent lower than the very competitive prices you already saw,” Schwartz said.

Customer service and relationships are at the heart of success

Founded in 1937 by Schwartz’s grandmother, Rita Effler Schwartz, and her father William Effler, the store has remained a fixture in College Hill for nearly nine decades. Schwartz took over the business from his parents, David and Sandy, who ran it for more than 30 years. His wife, Andrea, a former high school science teacher, has worked beside him for years.

"Along the way, we have been fortunate enough to have been awarded City Beat's "Best Jeweler", "Best Place to Buy Your Engagement Ring", and "Best of the Best" Awards, by The Cincinnati Enquirer,” he said.

A lifetime of special moments

For Schwartz, running a family business has resulted in forging close relationships with customers over generations. Some shoppers still remember his grandmother, while others bring their children and grandchildren to buy jewelry to celebrate their own milestones.

“I’ve met some of the best people I’ve ever known through the jewelry store,” he said. “We’ve sold engagement rings to people whose parents and grandparents also bought theirs here.”
