Cincinnati Native Eric Fleetwood Completes Historic Freshman Season, Ranks No. 2 in the Country in JUCO D1

HAMILTON, Ohio, June 1, 2026 — Eric Fleetwood, a freshman first baseman at Triton College in River Grove, Illinois, has completed one of the most productive freshman seasons in JUCO Division I baseball, finishing the 2026 campaign ranked No. 2 nationally in batting average among all JUCO Division I players. The Cincinnati native is now playing for the Hamilton Joes of the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League, bringing his breakout season back to the region where his baseball career began.

Fleetwood, 18, hit .489 with 13 home runs, 53 RBI, a .602 on-base percentage, and a 1.486 OPS across 44 games for the Triton College Trojans in 2026. He walked 24 times against just 14 strikeouts, a walk-to-strikeout ratio that reflects the plate discipline typically associated with upperclassmen. He batted cleanup for Triton as a freshman and is currently drawing transfer interest from Division I programs.

The 6-foot-3, 245-pound first baseman is not only among the nation’s top JUCO hitters, he is also carrying a 4.0 GPA as a business major. He won ECC Player of the Year and Most Impactful Player honors in 2025 before enrolling at Triton, where he introduced himself to the coaching staff by reaching out directly, the same self-starting approach that has defined his development as a player.

Fleetwood grew up in Cincinnati playing travel baseball, frequently as the only Black player on his team, an experience that reflects a well-documented decline in Black representation across the sport. Black players made up just 6.8 percent of MLB Opening Day rosters in 2026, down from 18 percent in 1991. This past season at Triton marked one of the first times Fleetwood has played alongside multiple players of color and Black coaches, an experience he has described as meaningful, and one that has made him hopeful about helping change the picture for younger players coming up behind him.

Fleetwood was selected to the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League, one of the oldest summer collegiate leagues in the country, and sanctioned and supported by Major League Baseball. He is currently playing for the Hamilton Joes, based in Hamilton, Ohio, roughly 20 miles north of Cincinnati. The Joes play home games at Foundation Field through the end of July.
