🌱 Pay-To-Stay Ruled Constitutional + City Makes Top 100 Best Places

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Cincinnati.

Good morning, neighbors. It's me, Carla Varner, your host of the Cincinnati Daily — here to tell you everything that's fit to print about what's happening in town these days. Keep scrolling for the scoop.

First, today's weather:

Mostly sunny and humid. High: 91 Low: 69.

Here are the top three stories today in Cincinnati:

  1. Hamilton County Judge Dwane Mallory ruled on Tuesday morning that the "pay-to-stay" ordinance passed unanimously by the Cincinnati City Council last December is constitutional and can now be enforced. The ordinance gives tenants facing eviction a new defense to help them stay. Legal Aid Society of Greater Cincinnati Attorney Zach Frye said, "Pay-to-stay means that when a tenant pays all their past due rent plus late fees, court costs, and reasonable attorney fees, or if they get a voucher from an agency like Community Action Agency or Hamilton County Child and Family Services that that creates a defense for the eviction for non-payment of rent." (WCPO 9 Cincinnati)
  2. The federal trial of two veteran Cincinnati police officers who filed a reverse racial discrimination lawsuit against the city and police chief for being disciplined for saying a racial slur is set to begin on Wednesday with opening statements. U.S. District Court Judge Susan Dlott will preside over the proceedings set to begin at 9:00 a.m. The officers, Donte Hill, who is Black, and Dennis Barnette, who is white, claim that the city violated their constitutional rights by treating them differently for using the "n-word" to refer to Black citizens during responses months apart in 2018. (FOX19)
  3. Livability ranked Cincinnati in the top 100 best places to live in the U.S. The Queen City was the only city in Ohio to make the list, ranking 42 out of 100, just above Virginia Beach, Virginia. Cincinnati was given the "livescore" of 624. (FOX19)
