Pick-Up Crashes Into Garbage Truck, Trash Collector Dead

Investigators said the Rumpke truck's safety lights were on and active at the time of the crash.

CINCINNATI, OH — A garbage truck driver is dead after his vehicle was hit by a pick-up truck on Monday. Investigators are still looking into what prompted the crash.

The driver, 52-year-old David Evans, was out of his Rumpke truck collecting trash when he was hit by the pick-up. He was taken to Miami Valley Hospital where he was later pronounced dead, WLWT 5 reported.

The pick-up driver was also taken to the hospital but suffered only non-life-threatening injuries.

Investigators have determined that the Rumpke truck had its safety lights on at the time of the accident. The posted speed limit in the area where the accident occurred is 35 mph. Some residents told WLWT 5 that drivers frequently go faster than that. It's unclear how fast the pick-up truck was driving.

Lawmakers in Ohio recently passed legislation mandating that drivers slow down when passing a stopped garbage truck.
