Ruby Garnet's gritty regional western "Dogwood" premieres at RJ Cinema Distillery & Taproom, Sept. 24
Southern Ohio native Ruby Garnet offers a new perspective on the American frontier with the western "Dogwood"
Of all the unlikely paths to writing, producing, and starring in a feature film western, Ruby Garnet’s might be one of the unlikeliest. A Marine veteran of the Iraq war and longtime government intelligence expert, this mother of three eventually followed a childhood dream of movie stardom, and is seeing it fulfilled with the opening of the film “Dogwood” which will be distributed by Aric Films. The film premieres on Sept. 24 at RJ Cinema Distillery & Taproom, 4450 Eastgate South Drive, Cincinnati, OH 45245.
“Dogwood” tells the story of a Civil War widow, Harriet Beckwith (Garnet) who takes her three young children to her late husband’s family home in southwestern Ohio, which is still essentially frontier territory. With the aftermath of the war still lingering, the town of Dogwood is run by ruthless Daniel Manlius (Eric Roberts). An unspeakable act of violence leads Harriet to drastic measures, which start to inspire the townspeople to stand up and fight for their community.
Drawing from her own experience as a military veteran and attuned to the issues related to post-combat life for those left behind, Ruby also returned to her home region in Ohio to create an authentic, gritty western that speaks to abuses of power and how those who seem weak may find strength in numbers and determination.

With a predominantly female-lead crew and the aid of many talented locals on and off-screen, “Dogwood” captures a new view of the American frontier and speaks to the value of community and collaboration.
