911 Tapes: 10-Year-Old Goes On Joy Ride Around Cleveland

The kid led the Ohio State Highway Patrol on a short chase before pulling over. Listen as people report the kid's escapade.

CLEVELAND, OH — For the second time in less than two weeks, a 10-year-old Cleveland boy took his mother's car and went on a joy ride. The boy led the Ohio State Highway Patrol on a chase across three counties before being pulling over on the Ohio Turnpike.

Audio files from police dispatch 911 tapes reveal that it was anything but a joyride for other drivers. "The kid's, like, swerving in and out of traffic, and almost run a couple cars off the road," said one 911 caller. "He's swerving in and out of lanes like crazy."

Cleveland Police were called to the boy's mother's house, near Hadley Ave., at about 9 a.m. Thursday morning. When they arrived, they spoke with the 37-year-old mother and then searched the area. Officers were initially unable to locate either the vehicle or the boy.

The boy drove the car west on I-90, through Lorain and Erie counties, according to Westlake Police. Officers with that department say the silver car hit speeds of 96 miles per hour when going through the city.

Ohio State Highway Patrol located the missing child, behind the wheel of the car, a short time after near the 118 milepost on the turnpike. The boy was taken into custody shortly thereafter. The boy was not hurt.

The boy first stole his mother's car Oct. 16. The boy's mother reported him missing that morning and then told police he took her car. The boy had grabbed the keys and drove a 2013 Dodge Charger out of the driveway, sometime between 7:30 a.m. and 8 a.m.

Cleveland Police were able to track the boy down on I-90 east near the W. 117th St. exit ramp. The boy was cruising in the high speed lane. The Charger had three flat tires at the time, according to police records.

The boy pulled over and was taken into police custody. He told officers that he stole the vehicle because he was "bored." The Charger was towed from the scene and the boy was released to his mother.

After today's incident, the boy's mother declined an interview with Patch.
