24-Year-Old Dead After Officer-Involved Shooting In Cleveland

Cleveland police said an off-duty officer fired his gun at two men in a car on W. 25th Street after an "encounter."

CLEVELAND — A 24-year-old was pronounced dead after an officer-involved shooting in Cleveland on Thursday afternoon, police announced. The Cuyahoga County Sheriff's office is now investigating the incident.

At 2 p.m. on Thursday, an off-duty Cleveland police officer saw two men on W. 25th Street. He suspected the men were doing something criminal. He got in his car and then encountered the men, in their own car.

After an "encounter" between the officer and the men, one of the men pulled out a gun. The officer then fired at the man, a Cleveland police spokesperson said.

The driver of the other car then crashed into a fence outside of Riverside Cemetery. The passenger in the car ran off.

The driver was rushed to MetroHealth Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

The 17-year-old was taken into custody later. He was also treated at MetroHealth with unknown injuries.

The officer was not hurt, police said.

Members of the use of force investigation team and the Cuyahoga County Sheriff's office are investigating the incident.
