4 Facts On Ohio's First Day Of Medical Marijuana Sales

The first sale of medical marijuana in Ohio happened Wednesday. Find out how sales are going.

The first legal sale of cannabis flowers in Ohio occurred this week, years after the state legalized medical marijuana.

First day sales figures were released by the Ohio Medical Marijuana Control Program on Thursday. Patients are still being warned that in the first months of sales, there could be significant delays in receiving marijuana, or long waits at the few operating dispensaries.

Here's are four fast facts on Ohio's first day of marijuana sales:

  • Four dispensaries are currently operating in the Buckeye State
  • 8.7 pounds of marijuana were sold Jan. 16
  • Sales totaled $75,000 across the state
  • Only dried cannabis flowers are currently available. Other products will be sold once production ramps up

Several companies in Ohio have said they will offer tinctures, topicals, pills, edibles and vape pens. Expect those products to hit dispensaries later this year.

Dispensaries across the state celebrated their opening and the first day of business. Huron's Firelands Scientific CEO Jeff McCourt said his mother, who suffers from rheumatoid arthritis, was excited to have a legal and non-addictive way to kill her pain.

“Because of my condition, I lost so many things I loved doing in life – like playing golf, playing the guitar, and even picking up my children from the crib when they were babies. While it may not be an answer to everything, I’ve personally benefited from medical cannabis and I’m very relieved that this will now be an option as part of my treatment regimen, and perhaps some people will be able to avoid the suffering I endured with access to this medicine," said Chris McCourt, Jeff's Mother.
