1. Cleveland to release plans for some closed CMSD buildings Friday (cleveland19.com) — Cleveland officials are set to reveal plans Friday for reusing 12 closed Cleveland Metropolitan School District buildings, many on the city's East Side. Proposals range from affordable housing to community centers and nonprofit space, while state officials monitor how the city and CMSD comply with laws giving charter schools first rights to buy the properties.
2. New motion alleges hazing, cover-up in Cleveland fire cadet's death (news5cleveland.com) — Cleveland residents should know that a new court motion in the wrongful death lawsuit over fire cadet Symeon Williams alleges hazing at the Cleveland Fire Training Academy and a records cover-up by the city. The filing asks a judge to pause deadlines so the family can seek additional documents and possibly add more defendants, while city officials strongly deny any wrongdoing and say they've acted in good faith.
3. Residents speak against data centers at Cleveland public hearing (fox8.com) — Cleveland City Council is weighing the future of large data centers after residents packed a Collinwood Recreation Center hearing to warn about higher electric bills, water use, and neighborhood pollution. With a three-month moratorium on new permits about to expire, council scheduled two more hearings at City Hall and Gunning Recreation Center so residents can keep pressing their case.
4. CMSD Parent University Saturday Family Learning Experiences (clevelandmetroschools.org) — Cleveland families in the CMSD can sign up now for Parent University's Saturday Family Learning Experiences, held at the Arnold R. Pinkney East Professional Center on East 79th Street. Across four Saturdays from October through April, parents and caregivers can join rotating sessions on student success, wellness, finances, college and career readiness, and parent leadership, with light refreshments provided.
5. Cleveland Orchestra Cancels Concerts as Musicians Go on Strike (cleveland13news.com) — Cleveland Orchestra musicians are on strike, forcing the cancellation of Thursday's Severance Music Center concert and a planned University of Michigan performance, with future local dates uncertain. Salary is the main sticking point as negotiations continue, but other Severance events, including guest performances and the Halloween Spooktacular, are still scheduled, and ticket-holders can request refunds or exchanges.
