Baker Mayfield Is Browns No. 1 Pick — And Reactions Are Split

The Oklahoma Sooner quarterback reminds some fans of Johnny Manziel. For others, they see leadership and big production.

CLEVELAND, OH — Heisman trophy winning quarterback Baker Mayfield was the No. 1 pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. Snagged by the Cleveland Browns, an outside observer could see why the Oklahoma Sooners signal caller went where he did — he was one of the most productive college quarterbacks in history. Unfortunately, that isn't the whole story.

Mayfield has a history of making questionable decisions — none more notable than getting himself arrested in February 2017 for public intoxication and disorderly conduct. He also grabbed his groin area during a game against Kansas, while mouthing some inappropriate words, and planted the Oklahoma University flag in the middle of Ohio Stadium after beating The Ohio State University.

It's not hard to see why opinions are split on Mayfield.

For some Browns fans, looking at the six foot (and almost) one inch quarterback conjures memories of another former Cleveland signal caller — Johnny Manziel. Both men were undersized but put up massive numbers in college, both were Heisman trophy winners and both had issues with keeping their cool off-the-field.

A contingent of the Dog Pound felt the Browns should taken Saquon Barkley, the running back from Penn State, with the No. 1 pick and grabbed a quarterback at No. 4. It was a sentiment echoed by a few members of the media.

But there are also those who think Mayfield is an unparalleled leader, an emotional player that can lob accurate passes and take charge of a team. One of those people happens to be a Northeast Ohio native and former Oklahoma University football coach.

"Selfishly, me being a guy from Youngstown, Ohio, and an hour from Cleveland, I can't wait for him to bring the Browns back and be the guy they've needed," said Bob Stoops, according to the Oklahoma Football Twitter account.

And before anyone thinks Stoops is a homer (and he probably is for Mayfield), he's not the only person praising the Mayfield selection. Former Buckeye Kirk Herbstreet praised the pick on draft night and even regular fans are chiming in with love for the Oklahoma product.
