Baker Mayfield Earns Rookie Of The Year Honors From PFWA

The Pro Football Writers of America are the first organization to honor Mayfield for his stellar first year in the NFL.

CLEVELAND — Baker Mayfield has been named Rookie of the Year by the Pro Football Writers of America. The Cleveland Browns quarterback broke the record for touchdowns thrown by a rookie.

Mayfield's stiffest competition for the Rookie of the Year accolade was running back Saquon Barkley of the New York Giants. The Pro Football Writers of America gave Barkley a consolation prize, naming him Offensive Rookie of the Year.

There are two more Rookie of the Year awards yet to be handed out this year. The NFL holds a fan vote — Mayfield and teammate Nick Chubb are both nominated — and the Associated Press has yet to name its recipients.

The NFL will hold a ceremony honoring the winners of the Associated Press awards.

This is the second major accolade for Mayfield, though. He was already named to Pro Football Writers of America's All-Rookie team, an honor he shared with fellow first round pick Denzel Ward.
