Businesses in Cuyahoga County Pay $33 Billion in Payroll

The largest chunk of payroll comes from companies with more than 500 employees.

CUYAHOGA COUNTY, OH - Employers in the county are paying more than $33 billion to employees. The new numbers, released recently, are included in the 2014 Statistics of U.S. Businesses from the U.S. Census.

The more than $33 billion payroll payout is up from 2013's numbers, which pegged payroll in the county at more than $32.6 billion. Large firms are also employing more people, with about 6,000 more workers than 12 months previous.

The biggest chunk of the payroll payout in the 2014 data comes from companies with 500 employees or more. There are 1,517 companies with more than 500 workers and those companies are paying more than $20 billion to their employees. By the most recent tally, there are 374,926 employees working at those companies.

In terms of number of companies of a certain size, there are 20,869 firms with less than 20 employees. There are a little less than 90,000 people working for those companies. Nearly 200,000 more people work for companies larger than the less than 20 firms and smaller than the more than 500 companies.

The data includes most employers in the county. It excludes businesses without employees, those working out of private households or government entities.
