Cleveland Cop Fired For 2nd Drunken Driving Arrest

Police department officials said the officer was on a "Last Chance Agreement" for previous disciplinary actions.

CLEVELAND — Cleveland Police announced Friday that they have fired Patrolman Robert Sweany. Sweany was arrested on December 20, 2017 for driving intoxicated. He also had his gun on him while driving.

The Cleveland Police said Sweany was already on a "Last Chance Agreement" after he had previous disciplinary matters. Now that the case against Sweany is settled, Director of Public Safety, Michael McGrath and Cleveland Police Chief Calvin D. Williams, moved forward with Sweany's termination.

A disciplinary hearing for McGrath was held on September 21, 2018. His last day of work was Thursday, November 1.

Sweany was off-duty at the time of his arrest. He was on I-71 and was allegedly swerving along the roadway before Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers pulled him over.

"You smell like the brewery, you've p----d yourself, we've had two calls on you, and you can't keep between the lines. And as a matter of fact, you can barely talk and your eyes are really glassy," the arresting trooper told Sweany, according to cleveland.com.

Sweany previously pleaded no contest to a 2013 charge for driving under the influence, News 5 reported.
