Cleveland Man Killed Fighting Off Home Invader

The man was visiting his son and his son's mother when someone broke into their home.

CLEVELAND — A 37-year-old man was found shot to death in Cleveland on Sunday morning. Police believe the man was fighting off a home invader when he was shot in the chest.

At 6 a.m. on Sunday, officers were called to E. 162nd St. Callers said a man had been shot at a home on the street.

When police arrived, they found the 37-year-old inside the home, with a gunshot wound to his chest. Officers gave the man first aid until EMS arrived, but the 37-year-old was pronounced dead in the house.

Investigators learned the 37-year-old was visiting his son and his son's mother, who both live in the home on E. 162nd St. A man then broke into the home and attacked the child's mother.

The 37-year-old intervened and began fighting the other man. The suspect then shot the 37-year-old in the chest, killing him, police said.

The son and the son's mother were not badly hurt during the incident, according to police. It is not yet clear if the home invader has been taken into custody.

The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's office and the Cleveland police homicide unit are taking part in the ongoing investigation.
