Cleveland Metroparks Zoo Reopens June 17

Gov. Mike DeWine announced this week that zoos in Ohio could reopen in June.

CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo will reopen June 17. Gov. Mike DeWine lifted restrictions on zoos and other entertainment venues this week, allowing them to reopen in June.

“After nearly three months, we can’t wait to reopen Cleveland Metroparks Zoo to our community,” said Cleveland Metroparks Zoo Executive Director Chris Kuhar. “As we work diligently to reopen, safety will continue to be our number one priority to protect our employees, guests and all of the animals in our care.”

The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo first closed March 16, due to COVID-19 precautions. The zoo's revenue is now down more than $1.5 million versus the same time in 2019, the park system said in May.

On May 20, the zoo allowed visitors to drive through the park, as part of a fundraising campaign. The drive-thru program will end June 14. Tickets are still available for the event.

“We want to thank the community for their overwhelming support over the past several months,” said Kuhar. “While we prepare to reopen, there are still a few opportunities left to experience the Zoo from your vehicle for the first time in over 100 years.”

Cleveland Metroparks Zoo memberships will be reactivated starting June 17. All memberships which were valid during the closure will be extended automatically to compensate for the lost time.

When the zoo reopens, new health and safety guidelines will be implemented. An update on those precautions will be shared with the community prior to the June 17 reopening, the park system said.
